Silence plays many roles throughout the different phases of our lives. But how far does staying silent truly help and can it also cause harm?

We often hear the old saying, “Speech is silver, silence is gold.” With this mindset, people frequently choose silence to avoid friction. For example:

  • In school, fear or shyness might have kept you silent in many situations.

  • In spiritual paths, many seekers are encouraged to endure everything quietly.

Silence is also gender biased. In many gender-inequal societies, women are expected to remain silent more than men. They are told not to speak, laugh, dance, travel, or express themselves as though they were meant to live like they have no voice at all.
